Wake Up Call To The Church Of England

SN’s EXOCET TO CCJ
Dear Ann and Committee Members,
I am writing to you to register my disgust at the Church of England Synod’s adoption of the Kairos 2 document, A Moment of Truth – Faith in a Time of Genocide, and Archbishop Sarah Mullaly’s comments after her visit to the Palestinian Territories.
Both throw under a bus, years of patient effort of bringing Christians and Jews together. Both are full of factual errors, sickening innuendos and scandalous mischaracterisations, some of which I enumerate below.
I hope that the Christian members of our committee sympathise with my position and hopefully, support my disgust.
In spite of my disgust, I shall continue to support our Birmingham CCJ Committee efforts.
The facts and my views are enumerated below. If the Committee finds my views unacceptable, then I will resign with immediate effect.
ZIONISM
I am a proud English, Jewish Zionist. This means that I support Israel as the ancestral home of the Jewish people in the biblical spirit, in the spirit of the Balfour Declaration and in the spirit of the State of Israel’s Declaration of Independence; that is, a state where Jews and other resident ethnicities live peacefully side by side as equals.
Judaism can be compared to a three legged stool: the People (the Jews), The Law (the Torah) and the Land (Israel). The three legs hold up the seat and the seat binds together the legs. The seat is G-d. Take one leg away and the stool collapses.
COLONIALISM
Jews are not western colonial implants. Jews are an indigenous people of the Land of Israel as proved by the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Koran, archeological evidence and genetic evidence.
CHRISTIANS IN ISRAEL
Christians live in the State of Israel with full citizen rights. They rank equally with Jews and other religions before Israeli Law. If any discrimination is perpetrated against Christians, then the full force of Israeli state law is brought to bear on the perpetrators.
Christians who live on the West Bank in areas under Israeli jurisdiction, such as Area C, are protected by the same Israeli state law as Christians living in the State of Israel.
Christians living in West Bank Areas A and B are subject to Palestinian Law except in matters concerning terrorism where Israeli Military Law may operate if Palestine Civil Law fails.
Christians living in Gaza before Oct 7 2023 were subjected to Hamas law. After 22 January 2026, Christians living in Israeli administered Gaza hold the same position as Christians living in the Israeli administered areas of the West Bank. Christians living in Hamas administered Gaza are subjected to Hamas rule. Christians outside the State of Israel do not have a vote as they are not citizens of Israel (except in East Jerusalem where Christians are Israeli citizens unless they have opted out).
Israel is the only country that has a diplomatic position of Ambassador to the Christian World, responsible for handling relations between the 2bn Christians in the world and Israel.
The Christian community in the State of Israel is the only growing Christian community in the Middle East.
GENOCIDE
There has been no Genocide either in Gaza or on the West Bank.
If the Israelis were intent on committing Genocide on the Palestinians then:
– Why did the Israelis allow 0.5m Gaza children to be vaccinated in Feb 2025 to prevent the spread of a polio epidemic in Gaza?
– Why did the Israelis ensure that at least 3,000 calories/person/day of food aid (UN minimum 1,500calories/pp/dy) were delivered into Gaza throughout the war?
– Why did Israel warn civilians to get out of the way of impending military strikes (therefore warning Hamas)?
– Why did Israel establish ‘safe zones’ for civilians to avoid areas of conflict? (In contrast to Egypt which broke International Law (specifically, the Convention of Refugees in Africa), by not allowing neighbouring Gazan refugees to temporarily take refuge in Sinai, despite Israel’s pleadings).
– Why did Hamas propaganda not show the concentration camps, gas chambers, mass graves and firing squads that are typical of a Genocide?
APARTHEID
Apartheid does not exist in the State of Israel. All religions and ethnicities have equal rights in law, religion, education, health, welfare, job opportunities etc.
As an example, an Israeli Arab judge sentenced an Israeli Prime Minister (Ehud Olmert) to six years imprisonment for bribery.
Apartheid does exist in Palestinian controlled Area A of the West Bank and in the Hamas controlled areas of Gaza where no Jews are allowed.
PEACE
The Palestinians have rejected six offers of statehood, 1937, 1947, 1967,1993, 2000 and 2008. Israel accepted all these offers and used the 1947 peace offer to created the State of Israel in May 1948.
If my Christian colleagues are genuinely interested in supporting a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians, then I am sure that they will join me in encouraging the following five foundational steps,
that Palestinians:
– agree to live alongside the Jewish State, rather than instead of the Jewish State and
– give up their right of return to their 1948 homes in Israel and their refugee status under UNRWA and
– take out from their school curriculum the Jew hate and the right of the Palestinians to govern all of the land between the river and the sea, and to substitute the goal of two-states for two people and
– give up their ‘Pay for Slay’ policy (rewarding killing and maiming Israelis with stipends for life) and
– observe their International Law obligations under the Oslo Accords not to use ‘Lawfare’ against Israel.
On this foundation, peace can be built.
CONCLUSION
It is a great pity that the Archbishop did not seem too concerned with the persecuted Christian communities in Syria (persecuted by Syrian Islamists), Lebanon (persecuted by Hizbullah), Sudan and Nigeria.
The Kairos 2 document only serves to stoke the Israel/Palestine conflict by focussing on blame and victimhood.
What a shame that opportunities for peace were missed – again – the opportunity to help the Palestinians put blame and victimhood behind them and to help them look to a future of cooperation and growth with the Jews of Israel.

Stephen Newman
