  • Founder=Ramananda, was first Bhakti saint and founder of Bhakti Movement of northern India. Followed Rama. Inspired by One god of Islam. 

Guru Nanak played a crucial role in the Bhakti movement. Sufism and bhakti contributed to Nanak’s religious philosophy. He discarded elements such as selfishness, hypocrisy, falsehood and violence of Hinduism and Islam. His teachings incorporated the noblest principles of both religionsNanak taught one God’ (Ek Onkar) and that God constitutes the eternal truth and he resides in his creations. His teachings can be found in the sacred Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib (a vast collection of verses recorded in Gurmukhi= from the mouth of the Guru

Guru Nanak Dev ji said, ” I am neither Hindu Nor Muslim, I am a follower of god”, which actually spoke about his belief in one god. In Sikhism, the god is omnipresent, shapeless, timeless, and sightless. ( Nirankar, akar, alakh). Sikhism stress that, before creation there was God, and because of His will ( Hukam), the Illusion ( maya of attachment and enticement) came into being. The God in Sikhism is not male/female, and can only be seen through inward eye. Guru Nanak explained one thing clearly that there is only One who gives to Everyone and we should not forget Him. The Guru stressed that full knowledge of god is impossible in human form
WaheguruThe name most widely used for God by Sikhs is Waheguru , which means ‘wondrous enlightener‘. One must chant & repeat this name

Life & DeathIn Sikhism, death is a natural process, it’s only the physical body that dies, and the soul lives on through transmigration and reincarnation. For Sikhs, the purpose of life is to move closer to Waheguru and that death will help break the cycle of reincarnationSikhs believe Waheguru lives in everyone. Through a long series of reincarnations, possibly through up to 8,400,000 forms of life, they will be purified (Ritually Clean) and be able to return to Waheguru.
EscapeThe escape from the cycle of death and rebirth is known as mukti= The freeing of the soul from rebirth=salvation=liberation=one with Waheguru

KarmaSikhs believe in karma or ‘intentional action‘. Through good actions and by living a good life and keeping God in their minds, Sikhs hope to achieve good merit= (A beneficial influence built up through wholesome and skillful actions (karma), capable of affecting a person’s future experience in this life and the next) and hope to avoid punishment. Come back as a rat or baboon Sikhs also want to achieve a good rebirth to improve their chances of re-uniting with God. Most Sikhs believe God unites with those he is pleased with. When they have been united with Waheguru, the cycle of birth and death ends, suffering ends and the whole cycle is broken.

Amrit/NectarAmrit comes from the Sanskrit word “Amrita”A Sikh who has been initiated into the Khalsa (‘pure’; the Sikh brotherhood) is considered to be Amritdhari (Baptised) (amrit taker’) or Khalsa (‘pure’). Those who undergo initiation are expected to dedicate themselves to Waheguru (Almighty God) and work toward the establishment of the Khalsa Raj

  • Guru Amar Das (1479-1574) Fought Against The Caste and for the poor. Followers must eat together (rich or poor) “free kitchen”
  • Guru Ram Das (1534-1581) Found the city of Amritsar= Golden Temple today
  • Guru Arjan (1563-1606) Complied the Adi Granth= first religious book= Included Muslim hymns= finished the construction of the Golden temple 
  • Guru Hargobind (1595-1644) Take up arms and defend the Faith. Soldier Saint
  • Guru Har Rai (1630-1661) Missionary worker. Spread Nanak’s teachings
  • Guru Har Krishan (1656-1664) Humanitarian, helped sick people. Youngest of all the Gurus 
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621-1675) Stood up for all Religions. Everyone can choose what Faith they want to believe in. Protected the Hindu religion against Muslim attackers. Killed for not converting to Islam
  • Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708) Khalsa/Fought The Mughals/Amrit/5Ks
  • The Final Guru is the Guru Granth. The Spirit of all the Gurus. The Enlightened Book=The Scripture is The Guru. 1430 pages. 974 Shabads= the word or sound. The Eternal Guru. 43 Authors. Hindus, Muslims etc…..

This stone, not only sealed the tomb, it also would have made it difficult for someone to come right in and steal the body.

The seal was sign of authentication that the tomb was occupied and the power and authority of Rome stood behind the seal. Anyone found breaking the Roman seal would suffer the punishment of an unpleasant death.

A guard watched Jesus’ tomb. This was either the Roman guard or the Jewish temple police
There is a question as to which one of the two groups was watching over it. The context seems to favor the Roman guard. The Roman guard was a sixteen-man unit that was governed by very strict rules. Each member was responsible for six square feet of space. The guard members could not sit down or lean against anything while they were on duty. If a guard member fell asleep, he was beaten and burned with his own clothes. But he was not the only one executed, the entire sixteen-man guard unit was executed if only one of the members fell asleep while on duty
